Tool for facilitating informed and meaningful conversations with prospective families

This podcast discussion guide is designed to accompany the Navigating Adoption podcast from AdoptUSKids and can be used to facilitate meaningful conversations with prospective families about their foster or adoption journey.

Each of the six podcast episodes is about 30 minutes long and hosted by April Dinwoodie, an author, podcaster, and transracial adoptee with lived experience in the child welfare system.

Podcast episodes will address:

  • Adoption from foster care
  • The importance of family (especially for teenagers)
  • The value of support networks
  • Birth family and kinship connections
  • Ongoing effects of trauma

Family workers can use this guide in two ways. You can either listen to individual episodes and discuss each one separately with families, or you can host a broader conversation about the entire series.

This guide provides:

  • A web address and transcript for each episode
  • Conversation starters, questions, and facilitator notes
  • A general discussion section
  • A list of additional resources, organized according to topic

Audience: While this guide was designed to facilitate discussions with prospective parents, it can be adopted for use with existing foster, adoptive, and kinship families (for example, as resource parent training or continuing education), as well as with child welfare professionals. Consider sharing the podcast and discussion guide with any person or group who would benefit from hearing the lived experiences of families and youth.
