Webinar for parent group leaders: Understanding secondary traumatic stress

Apr 30

Parent support group leaders are vulnerable to experiencing secondary traumatic stress due to their role in supporting kinship, foster, and adoptive families.

In this AdoptUSKids webinar, you will learn how to recognize the signs of secondary traumatic stress in yourself using self-assessment, as well as concrete strategies to help you and your group members manage vicarious trauma.

The presenter—an experienced adoptive parent and group leader—will also share self-care techniques to avoid burnout and ways to respond to signs of secondary traumatic stress when they present in your group.

This webinar builds on foundational concepts covered in two AdoptUSKids resources. We recommend reviewing these before the webinar:

Presenter: Sue Badeau is a nationally known speaker, writer, and consultant. She is a former president of the North American Council on Adoptable Children’s board of directors and current president of Justice for Families. She is also an adoptive parent and experienced parent group leader.

Audience: New or experienced parent group leaders, staff of public or private agencies that offer parent groups, and individuals considering starting parent groups.
